There might be the occasional flare-up on court - but it was on the genteel stands of the Arthur Ashe Stadium that the real action took place yesterday.

Police were forced to escort three fans out of the U.S.

Open after a fight broke out during Novak Djokovic's match against Philipp Petzschner.

The second round match was halted in the eighth game of the first set after the brawl kicked off - apparently when a female spectator and her father took exception to another fan's swearing.

He will next play wild-card entry James Blake of the United States in the third round.

And Britain's No.1 Andy Murray takes on 113rd seed Dustin Browne of Jamaica in their second round match tonight at 8pm (BST).

JOHANNESBURG, Nov 19 (Reuters) - Ethiopia caused the first real shock of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers when they came from behind to stun the Ivory Coast with a 2-1 victory in their Group K clash in Bahir Dar on Tuesday.

Serge Aurier gave the Ivorians an early lead when he knocked in a rebound after Max Gradel´s free kick had been parried into his path by home goalkeeper Abel Mamo.

Yet Ethiopia were level on 16 minutes as Surafel Dagnachew´s free kick was deflected in off the wall, before Shemeles Bekele shrugged off two defenders, and a shout for handball, to score the winner midway through the opening period.

Madagascar continued their fine recent form in the other game in the pool with a thumping 6-2 victory over Niger in Niamey.

The win is the biggest ever on the road in Nations Cup qualifiers for Madagascar and puts them top of the group with a full haul of six points from their two games.

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) - Flying debris from an apparent drone strike has damaged a World Food Program truck in Ethiopia´s besieged Tigray region, the U.N.
agency said Monday, after Ethiopian forces and rival Tigray ones recently chose renewed fighting over peace.

The government accused Tigray forces of transporting fighters in trucks "illegally" painted with U.N. logos, and it warned humanitarian groups to avoid operating in areas where "the government is taking preventative measures to thwart attacks," according to a statement.

Journalists, human rights researchers and other independent watchdogs have been long barred from the Tigray region, complicating efforts to verify combatants' claims.

Ethiopia´s military has used drone strikes on many occasions in the conflict that began in late 2020, according to witnesses and health workers.

Humanitarian groups have struggled to deliver aid for an estimated 13 million people inside Tigray and in neighboring Amhara and Afar regions amid the fighting.

The Tigray region has been without basic services like power and communications for well over a year.

The WFP said two trucks had been traveling together from the Tigray city of Shire to the Zana district to help newly displaced people.

The driver of the damaged truck had minor injuries, the agency said.

The WFP called on all combatants to "commit to safeguarding humanitarian workers, premises and assets." A lull in fighting beginning in March enabled the WFP and its partners to reach almost 5 million people in the Tigray area, but fighting resumed in recent weeks.

The conflict has seen abuses by all sides.

Last week, U.N.-backed investigators said they have turned up evidence of war crimes and crimes against humanity by Ethiopian government forces, Tigray forces and the military of neighboring Eritrea, which also is targeting Tigrayans.

The Commission of Inquiry on Ethiopia said Ethiopian forces had resorted to the "starvation of civilians" as a tool of war.

ROME, Sept 27 (Reuters) - Italy sees its 2023 budget deficit below 5% of national output despite a darkening economic outlook triggered by the energy crisis, three sources close to the matter told Reuters.

Mario Draghi's outgoing government will this week unveil new growth and public finance estimates in its Economic and Financial Document (DEF), which will form the framework for the 2023 budget to be examined by European Union authorities.

The Treasury forecasts gross domestic product (GDP) will grow by 3.3% this year, up from the 3.1% target which was set in April.

For 2023, the government sees GDP growth of only around 0.6%, far below the previous target of 2.4%.

Italy plans to confirm its 2022 budget deficit goal at 5.6% of GDP, Economy Minister Daniele Franco said this month, but lower-than-expected growth will push next year's fiscal gap above the 3.9% previously targeted.

Nevertheless, the Treasury believes it can limit upward pressure and sees the Italian fiscal gap below 5% of GDP, the sources said.

In confirming a slight reduction in the deficit next year, the Treasury is helped by the fact that surging energy bills increase government revenues from excise duties and value added tax, one of the sources said.

The new figures will all be based on an unchanged policy scenario, as Draghi leaves it up to election victor Giorgia Meloni, leader of the far-right Brothers of Italy party, to set more ambitious targets.

Italy should send the draft budget to Brussels by mid-October for approval, but politicians in the rightist bloc said the new government would probably take office only in early November.

It is therefore likely that Draghi will sign off on the draft budget.

The first task for Meloni will be finding billions of euros to keep her election pledges to soften energy costs, cut taxes and block a hike in the retirement age due to kick in from January.

With inflation approaching double figures, the European Central Bank (ECB) delivered two oversized rate hikes in July and September and promised even more action, complicating Italy's efforts to head off the threat of recession and reduce public debt.

Gunshots caused panic at America's largest mall on Thursday, but the incident was soon resolved with no victims reported, according to officials.

The giant Mall of America complex in the midwestern state of Minnesota went into lockdown Thursday afternoon in what police described as an "active incident."

Footage shared on social media, which could not be immediately authenticated, showed panicked shoppers running through the sprawling mall, which has more than 500 stores.

Police in the city of Bloomington described the event as "an isolated incident," saying the suspect had fled the mall on foot.

"Based on information from (police), this was an isolated dispute between the suspects and there is no longer a threat," the Mall of America said in a statement on Twitter.

"MOA is scheduled to reopen Friday at 10 am."

A video of the incident on Twitter appears to show a person shouting while walking into a Nike store. Several gunshots are then heard.

In a separate video, families pushing children in strollers are seen running through the mall in fear, clutching shopping bags, while security guards patrol the premises with guns drawn.

A message can be heard on a loudspeaker, telling shoppers, "Attention: those who are not currently in a secure location, seek shelter immediately."

The United States has seen a wave of gun violence, with a record of approximately 45,000 deaths caused by firearms in 2020, according to federal data, but efforts at nationwide gun control have repeatedly failed.

French President Emmanuel Macron's support has seen a tumble just a week before the election as Marine Le Pen surges in the polls.

In the wake of his shrinking lead, Prime Minister Jean Castex went on the attack, warning voters the new 'centrist' image of perennial far-right challenger Le Pen is a 'sham' and that she 'hasn't changed'.

But Castex was dismissive of her new policy shift. 'We are in a serious crisis. It is not easy to govern a country like France.'

He added: 'Her programme has changed a lot, because the idea is to attract people, but basically the values that we know in the National Rally, in the Le Pen family, are the same.'

But with a little over a week to go until the first round elections on April 10, it is looking like it will be Le Pen to face off against Macron in the second round once again, in a re-run of the 2017 elections which Macron won with 66 per cent of the vote to 34 per cent.

The French elections are dividied into two rounds, with only the top two candidates advancing to a second round runoff.

The nearest other contender is the hard-Left Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who trails her by up to seven per cent.

report that one survey published by Le Monde this week said the number of people seeing Ms Le Pen as a threat has dropped two points since January, to 51 per cent.

Half of all people surveyed said they would not vote for her under any circumstances, but that was fewer than those who refused to back Mr Mélenchon and fellow far-right candidate Eric Zemmour, who was seen as Le Pen's likeliest rival.

Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine has dealt a blow to the far-right cause across Europe, which is seen to be ideologically aligned with the Russian dictator, and boosted Macron because of his handling of the diplomatic crisis caused by the war.

Macron can rest easy to some extent, as Le Pen will still face an uphill battle to unseat him if she does make it to the second round, as the current president is polled to take over fifty percent of the vote.
